What is wrong with my laptop?

When i power it on, it acts normal as if it is going to boot up, but then it goes to an all black screen with a little white cursor. Then these options appear that will allow me to boot; internal HDD, cd/dvd/cd-rw drive, onboard NIC, BIOS setup, & Diagnostics. If i run a diagnostic the "start DST short status test" says 'failed". what is wrong with my laptop and how do it get it back to working condition?
