How long does a dog take to forget old owners?

My rescued jack russell still looks sadly with hope in the direction of a little girl's voice because that was who was kind to him in his former home. I've had him since he was 3 and he's 11 now. I don't think they ever forget but they learn to adjust and love to be part of a pack. Lots of love really helps. Most rescued dogs get lots of love.
